Character designer of Final Fantasy franchise Yoshitaka Amano went to Shanghai for 2016 Shanghai Fashion Week. At the Fans Meeting section on April 11 hosted by Yingshu Wenhua, A9VG reporter won a precious chance to interview this art master and idol for many FF fans.
Mr. Amano was born in Shizuoka, and now lives in Tokyo. He told that his favorite place is Ebizu in Shibuya. As for his arrangement of life and work, he said, “except for time on commuting to the company, sleeping, eating and washing, most of the remaining time are spent on painting.” If he’s tired of simply drawing FF pictures, he’ll turn to some other cute things. Amano said there’s few days when he don’t draw anything. This new trip to Shanghai left him a very different impression compared with his last visit. Amano told he’s very fond of the vintage pictures on cigarette cases in 1930s Shanghai, so he bought many relevant souvenirs at Tianzifang (a district known for artwork).
When asked about what’s his inspiration in designing all FF characters, one of the mostly focused question of Chines gamers. Amano answered, the characters in FF1 to FF4 are originated from his own imagination, but in FF5 and FF6 are co-designed by hims and partners. Like Behemoth is produced from his concept and collaboration with fellow artists. When asked “who’s your most satisfied character?”, “Terra in FF6”, he answered without hesitation.
The “Big Bang” showed up at FF15 Uncovered is also a work of Yoshitaka Amano. According to Amano, that “picture is produced to display the splendid big bang in universe, and FF15 contains both modern and vintage factors, so that picture is a collision of reality and fantasy, and Square Enix is the core of that universe (laugh).” Amano also disclosed that SE has told him to 3Dlize the picture before his design started, and that whole 3Dlization only took a week. Amano praises that SE has an awesome world class team.
